A new study, published in the journal, finds that Viagra could be as safe as some of the other erectile dysfunction drugs that were first used in the 1950s to treat high blood pressure.
The study, funded by Pfizer, found that men who took Viagra had no increased risk of heart attacks, strokes or dementia, the researchers say.
"It's important to note that, in terms of the heart, this study found that Viagra was safe," said Dr. Peter C. Adams, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota. "But it's important to remember that, while we were talking about Viagra, a study on erectile dysfunction was not conducted and we found that sildenafil is safe for most men."
Viagra is not the first erectile dysfunction drug to be approved for the treatment of heart disease, said the study's authors.
Heart attacks and strokes were the most common causes of death for men taking Viagra, according to the study, published today in the journal The Journal of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Michael T. Kostin, lead author of the study, said that while the study did not address the question of the safety of Viagra, it was a clear demonstration that erectile dysfunction could be caused by a drug that is similar to the heart medication.
"We found that men taking Viagra had no increased risk of heart attacks, strokes or dementia," Kostin said.
Viagra, which is also sold under the brand name Cialis, is one of several drugs that could be linked to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and dementia.
